Although there is a need in corporate America to become more dominanted by women in high positions the dreams of this to come true at times are seen unrealistic. Not only are women dealing with recent issues of job loss but now they are more and more women working two jobs and still dealing with issues at home. Some of the studies presented in the course readings show that women experience the values vs. control dilemma, which basically sums up to state that women balance between their values and the control they have over other values they have. A perfect example that I have is my personal values and goals. I am soon graduating but at the same time I have my son to take care of. My education and getting into grad school are a big part of my educational motivation but struggling with issues of work schedule and trying to find a quality child care to take care of my son make me realize that these dreams are need to be put at hold. The values that I have to take care of my son are beyond my personal values and goals which leave a bitter sweet experience. Although my husband takes care of my son in order for me to go to school my husband goes to work at night and then for later on in the day I have no one to help me take care of him in order to get studying done or homework done. Although I try really hard to get my homework and projects done before I get home at times I don’t have time to read or study and I end up either studying all night with no sleep as my son sleeps. This creates a bit of discomfort because I have to go to work early in the morning. This semester has been like this so I have questioned whether it really is a good a idea to continue on if I won’t have time to study. My priority is my family and I wish at times there could be ways that I could achieve both being a good mother but as well reach my educational and professional goals.
In the short article for our readings emphasizes my struggles by stating that although the EEOC's states that "Men's role in parenting and other caregiving has increased, but is still vastly outweighed by women's.The article continues on to state that employers are also have a responsibility of these caretakers that balance work and family. Not only because they are employed by their organizations but because they have the responsibility to give them more flexible hours.
